How Can I Get Rid of Facial Hair?
Tweezing, bleaching, shaving, waxing and depilatory creams (think Nair) all work, but none are permanent.
”Laser epilation and electrolysis permanently
eradicate the problem,” says Marty Sawaya, M.D., Ph.D., an adjunct
professor of biochemistry at the University of Miami (Florida) school
of medicine. ”Electrolysis uses electric currents to kill the hair
follicle. And lasers use light to heat up the pigment in the hair,
causing it to self-destruct,” she explains. Both take about six
sessions over the course of one year to kill a follicle. But since an
electrolysis session covers a small patch of hair and can be painful,
lasers are becoming more popular.
There’s also a new product called Vaniqa, a cream that you apply to the
affected areas of your face, that slows hair-growth significantly.
”Vaniqa takes about eight weeks to work, and it’s effective in about 50
percent of users,” Dr. Sawaya explains. Since Vaniqa is by prescription
only, you’ll need to talk to your doctor.
